24th March - Saint Hildelida, Blessed Oscar Romero - Independent Catholic News: Abbess of Barking. According to legend, St Hildelida was an Anglo Saxon princess, who travelled to France to become a nun in the late 7th century, because there were no convents in England at that time. Bede writes that she lived in Chelles for several years. She was then recalled to England by St Erconwald to train her sister St Ethelburga, the first abbess of Barking, now a district in north London. She eventually succeeded her.
