St. Margaret Clitherow, Roman Catholic English Martyr March 26

Image
St. Margaret Clitherow, Roman Catholic English Martyr. She was born in Middleton, England, in 1555, of protestant parents. Possessed of good looks and full of wit and merriment, she was a charming personality. In 1571, she married John Clitherow, a well-to-do grazier and butcher (to whom she bore two children), and a few years later entered the Catholic Church. Her zeal led her to harbor fugitive priests, for which she was arrested and imprisoned by hostile authorities. Recourse was had to every means in an attempt to make her deny her Faith, but the holy woman stood firm. Finally, she was condemned to be pressed to death on March 25, 1586. She was stretched out on the ground with a sharp rock on her back and crushed under a door over laden with unbearable weights. Her bones were broken and she died within fifteen minutes. Her feast day is March 26th.

Jesuit lay-brother and martyr. There is no record of his family, birthplace, date of birth, or baptism. Nicholas had been a carpenter and servant of the Society of Jesus. He joined the order around 1580. At the execution of St Edmund Campion he openly declared him innocent and was imprisoned. After his release he served Fathers Henry Garnett and John Gerard for eighteen years. Small in stature - he was often called 'Little John' - he was greatly esteemed for his dedication and skill in building hiding places for priests. Nicholas was captured again with Fr John, escaped from the Tower, and helped the escape of Father Gerard. He was finally arrested for the last time at Hindlip Hall, Worcestershire, while impersonating Fr Garnett. "It is incredible," wrote Cecil, "how great was the joy caused by his arrest - knowing the great skill of Owen in constructing hiding places, and the innumerable quantity of dark holes which he had schemed for hiding priests all throug

St Katharine Drexel Nun and foundress March.3

Image
St Katharine Drexel Nun and foundress  Nun and foundress. Katharine Drexel was the daughter of a millionaire banker. Born in Philadelphia in 1858, she had an excellent education and travelled widely. Her unusual family had their own railway car and were used to every luxury. But her mother also opened the door of their home to the poor three days each week and her father spent half an hour each evening in prayer. As a young woman Katherine nursed her stepmother through a three-year terminal illness. This made her realise that all the Drexel money could not buy safety from pain or death. It was around this time her life took a profound turn. Katherine had always been interested in the plight of the Native American Indians, having been appalled by reading Helen Hunt Jackson's A Century of Dishonor. While on a European tour, she met Pope Leo XIII and asked him to send more missionaries to Wyoming for her friend Bishop James O'Connor. The Pop
